Dr Mary Anthony
As Departmental Audit Chairman undertook with the Clinical Audit Services an audit of paediatric activity in A&E in January 1998 with a view to implementing changes to shorter admission times and improve clinical services. Changes have been made and will need to be re-evaluated in the winter of 1998/9. The audit results are in preparation for publication.


Dr Nick Archer
Dr Archer remains on the Editorial Board with Archives of Diseases of Childhood.


Dr Mike Burch
Dr Burch has been commissioned to write two editorials - (1) for Archives of Diseases of Childhood on ‘new strategies for the management of heart failure’ and (2), ‘hypertrophic cardiomyopathy’ for the Journal of Paediatric Cardiology. Dr Burch has supervised Dr Lucy Grain in her project looking at ‘Cardiac function in carriers of the Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy gene’. Dr Burch took up appointment as District Clinical Trust for the Oxford district in October 1998.

Dr Janet Craze
Two new teaching sessions for junior paediatric staff in the John Radcliffe have been introduced so there is now a regular teaching exercise every weekday. The medical student paediatric course has been redesigned by Prof. Wilkinson and the new programme will be piloted in January 1999. Closer liaison between the nurses of 4C and A and E staff with teaching input from Dr. Craze for nurses and SHOs in A and E have been introduced to try to maintain a good standard of care for children not directly cared for by paediatric staff. Dr Gerald Draper Gerald Draper continued to be a member of the Committee on Medical Aspects of Radiation in the Environment, the Steering Committee for the Small Area Health Statistics Unit and the DH Advisory Committee on Cancer Registration, chairing the Working Group on the national Cancer Registration Minimum Dataset. He was also on the DH Expert Group on Cot Death Theories.


Mr Nick Dudley
Mr Dudley holds numerous management positions locally, nationally and at international level. He is a member of the Higher Awards Committee, Regional Advisor for All Surgical Specialities, Regional Advisor for Paediatric Surgery, Member of Local Medical Workforce Advisory Groups Committee, Member of South East Paediatric Surgery Education and Training Consortium, President British Association of Endocrine Surgeons, member of Executive BAES, Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh), Invited Member of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, Council Member of the International Association of Endocrine Surgeons. All three surgeons are involved in giving lectures to the Medical Students, Ward Round teaching and tutorials and outpatient clinic sessions and examinations

Dr Julie Edge

Mr Hugh Grant
Mr Grant is on the BST appointment committee and is a regular reviewer of both books and abstracts for the Archives of Disease in Childhood.


Dr Ann Harris

Dr Dominic Kwiatkowski
In 1998, Dominic Kwiakowski was appointed to a MRC Clinical Research Professorship and awarded the University title of Professor of Tropical Paediatrics. Dominic Kwiatkowski served on an External Advisory Committee of the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (USA). Appointed to MRC Clinical Research Professorship and awarded the University title of Professor of Tropical Paediatrics.


Dr Tony McShane
Dr McShane is the paediatric representative on the Regional panel for Intra-venous Immunoglobulin treatment, and lead clinician for the Adolescent Unit. He has contributed to undergraduate & postgraduate teaching and undergraduate examination, and has reviewed books and papers for Archives of Disease in Childhood and for Brain, and acts as a referee for grant applications for two charitable bodies.


Dr Chris Mitchell
Member of Medical Research Council (MRC) Childhood Leukaemia Working Group. Co-ordinator of MRC ALL 97 study of therapy in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Chairman of United Kingdom Children’s Cancer Study Group (UKCCSG) Wilms’ tumour committee. Co-ordinator of UKCCSG UK W3 study of therapy in Wilms’ tumour. Member of UKCCSG Biological Studies and Soft-tissue Sarcoma Committees Member of UKCCSG Manuscript Review Committee.

Dr Inga Ostman-Smith
Dr Ostman-Smith continued to work in the field of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy and has began collaboration with Professor Watkins. Dr Ostman-Smith is the Regional Adviser for paediatric cardiology training in the Oxford region; Dr Burch has taken on the role of Deputy Regional Adviser to Dr Fran Acland in Paediatrics, and has in particular, introduced the Assessment system to Oxford Paediatric Calman Trainees.


Dr Jo Poulton
Reader in Mitochondrial Genetics, Department of Paediatrics, University of Oxford from Oct 1998 . Clare Freeman Emmerson awarded D.Phil, November 1998.


Dr Clare Robertson
Organiser of Oxfordshire’s Paediatric Surveillance Course for General Practitioners.


Dr M Pike
Dr Pike is Paediatric College Tutor, has contributed to undergraduate & postgraduate teaching and undergraduate examination. He has reviewed papers for Developmental Medicine and Child Neurology. He has been co-opted to the Council of the British Paediatric Neurology Association to conduct an evaluation of the provision of paediatric neurology services in Centres in the United Kingdom.


Dr Alison Schefler
Dr. Alison Shefler and Dr. Emily Williams are members of the Paediatric Intensive Care Clinical Working Group for Anglia and Oxford, and in keeping with the remit of a Lead Centre, will be providing regional outreach training to nurses, junior doctors, and paramedical personnel. Dr. Shefler is a member of the Oxford Ambulance Service Paramedic Steering Committee.

Dr Ann Wakefield

Dr Stephen Westaby
Dr Westaby inserted the first artificial heart in a child and the child was successfully bridged to transplantation.
